What Are IAF and the IAF MLA?
The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) developed international cooperation in accreditation for certification, validation and verification. The IAF MLA was a multilateral recognition arrangement through which participating accreditation bodies recognised one another’s accreditations within agreed scopes.
Role in Certification
The IAF MLA framework covered activities including management system, product and personnel certification, as well as validation and verification. Recognition depends on the accreditation body’s recognised scope and the activities covered by the certification body’s accreditation.
What Does This Mean for Customers?
- Supports international confidence in accredited certification.
- Helps reduce repeated conformity assessment across markets.
- Makes checking the issuing body’s accreditation scope an essential step when reviewing a certificate.
Continuity Under Global ACI
On 1 January 2026, the work of IAF and ILAC was brought together under Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated (Global ACI). International recognition continues within the Global ACI MRA framework. Transitional use of the IAF MLA Mark is subject to the applicable rules.
